Jimmy’s National Geographic cover of Alex Honnold on Half Dome (May 2011 - ”Above Yosemite”) was chosen as the “Sports & Adventure Cover of the Year” by the American Society of Magazine Editors.

With 4am alpine starts and blustery conditions, Hennie took the opportunity to get some sick footage for an upcoming project. It’s safe to say we’re all psyched to see what he comes up with.

Stay tuned for all things Camp4 as the guys get ready to head to Jasper, Canada with The North Face.

The idea started off as...

TENT BOUND IN DEVIL’S BAY (2012).

The idea started off as a good one: To establish new trad climbs on the amazing 1,200-foot granite big-wall rocketing directly out of the ocean in Devil’s Bay, Newfoundland. But for climbers Hazel Findlay, Alex Honnold, James Pearson and Mark Synnott, the great idea soon became something much different then planned.

Though Newfoundland is relatively close to Mark Synnott’s home in upstate New Hampshire, in reality, it would be easier to reach some Himalayan basecamps than get to Devil’s Bay. Five days of travel by car and boat into this land forgotten by modern time, the team finally arrived only to discover adverse conditions and suffering.

Expeditions are remembered for being either great successes or grand failures. But the reality is that most of the time, they are neither. For the climbers, their experience became as much an inward exploration of their own hopes, anxieties and fears as it was an exploration of the vertical walls. “Tentbound in Devil’s Bay” is a portrait of the darker side of an expedition, a side that you rarely hear about.

TENT BOUND IN DEVIL’S BAY (2012) Q&A with Matt...

TENT BOUND IN DEVIL’S BAY (2012) Q&A with Matt Irving

If there is anything universal in the film world it’s the idea that no project is a one-man production. Collaboration, teamwork, and a few pats on the rear for good measure are the soul that shapes any good crew – that’s what Camp 4 Collective is all about. So in that vein of teamwork, we wanted to shed a bit more light on one of our crew members that worked countless hours both on location and in the studio to make ‘Tent Bound’ (our most recent film release) happen.

Matt Irving

film maker, gun owner, and all around good guy

[note: never make the mistake of taking matt too seriously… his sarcasm is legendary]

How long was the trip?

Not long enough. At least that’s what my initial reaction was when we started out, however after 10 days of sitting in a tent getting rained on, I changed my opinion to “too long”. But seriously, including travel and a little stop in Maine, it was 22 days.

What was involved getting to Devil’s Bay, Newfoundland?

It was a lot of driving, a couple of days of boat riding, and a flight across the country. The driving wasn’t too bad, because I have a tendency to fall asleep at the wheel, so Tim Kemple took care of that. It was cool because it’s something any group of friends could do. It’s not like you’re flying halfway around the world and trekking thru the jungle. It’s more like a road trip, plus a couple boats.

What kind of cameras did you shoot on?

We shot mostly on the Canon 5d MKII, and a little bit on the Panasonic TM900. It’s important to figure out what camera is going to be optimal for these trips. The best camera doesn’t always mean the biggest, most expensive camera that shoots the best quality and the highest frame rate. A lot of it boils down weight, and being able to use it in a backcountry, vertical environment. Yes, we could have brought the RED MX 1, but it didn’t make sense. Also, I would have killed myself.

How did you keep things dry?

Trash bags. Just kidding. I mean, tents are essentially giant trash bags, so that’s really not far off. When we were out and about, I would just stash gear in my handy F-Stop bag. Luckily, the cameras we brought were pretty resilient in wet weather, so despite personally absorbing massive amounts of water, the gear stayed dry.

How did you power your gear?

We initially brought Goal-0 lithium batteries, as well as solar panels, but we decided to bring a small generator at the last minute. This turned out to be a lifesaver. Having cameras that don’t use too much power helped as well. We should have tried to build a wind farm because it was really, really windy.

Were there any crazy moments?

When they said we were going to “Blow Me Down”, I was thinking something different. One night we were attacked by a giant windstorm, and it turns out the name refers to the fact that it’s insanely windy and not what I originally thought.

I was sleeping on the side of the tent that was getting pounded by the wind, so I’d wake up with fabric against my face. Thinking I was being smothered, I freaked out. I can’t remember, but I might have tried to kill Tim in the midst of my terror. I’m sure glad I didn’t.

Anyway, I propped up the tent with my legs and arms until about 4am, until Tim “The Genius” Kemple, suggested that we use the tripods, which seems like the logical thing to do. It worked out really well, and I got about an hour of sleep.

Another crazy moment was when Alex Honnold slipped and fell down some boulders. He might be mad that I’m sharing this, but it was pretty funny and/or scary. Well, it’s only funny because he miraculously didn’t get hurt, but the look on his face as he was tumbling down was priceless. He ended up on a ledge, upside-down in this bush. I think if he would have kept going, he would have been pretty messed up.

What is it like undertaking the editing on a project like this?

I’m not sure. It was a long editing process, but having some really awesome editors to provide really good feedback along the way made it way easier. Having Tim tell me what to do the whole time was nice. It was really great to have him in the studio so we could sit down and discuss how we could shape the piece.

What would you have done differently?

Looking back on the edit, there are little things I’d change, but I think for the luck we were handed, we did a banger job. Going in to the trip, we had a really solid idea on how we wanted the piece to turn out, but when that went to shit, we sat down and reworked our plan. Our plan being rain…everyday… not climbing. As for the trip, I probably would have packed more rain gear, and appropriate shoes. For some reason, I packed really crappy shoes. I ended up skating all over the slabby granite approach. It sucked and was kind of sketchy.

Aside from your camera gear, what’s the most important thing you always pack for a trip like this?

My wits. It’s good to have them at all times. Also, socks. Nice socks.

What was your proudest moment during the project?

I’m still waiting for that. But, honestly, anytime my coworkers tell me I did a good job is pretty awesome. They’re all really talented and really honest (as far as feedback goes) so when I get their approval, I feel like I did a good job.

What was the biggest lesson you learned during the project?

Patience, and that it’s ok to let certain things go. I had ideas that I really liked and I became attached to them. When it became apparent that we needed to change our plan, it was hard to let go, but in the end I think it’s a better piece because of it. I think there is definitely a balance between staying emotionally invested in a project and staying objective.

Guess whose on that list! Our very own Renan Ozturk and Jimmy Chin! Below is the full press release.

———————————————————————————————————

PRESS RELEASES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Release
March 21, 2012

Media Contacts:
Justin Clifton / justin@5pointfilm.org / 970.401.0831
Jake Marty / jake@5pointfilm.org / 563.940.4709
Emily Nuchols / emily@5pointfilm.org / 360.510.8696
5Point Film Festival Announces Special Guests For Fifth Annual Festival April 26 to 29, 2012 in Carbondale, Colorado

Carbondale, Colo. — Since the 5Point Film Festival first launched five years ago, the event has welcomed and honored some of the world’s most celebrated adventurers. Founded as a community that aims to stoke the fire of adventure through film, art and live performances, the festival has always been a place to gather around the proverbial fire and tell stories of adventures and journeys past and those on the horizon.

This year, 5Point is proud to welcome Piolets d’Or nominated climbers Renan Ozturk and Jimmy Chin, Hayden Kennedy, paddlers and National Geographic Adventurers of the Year, Erik Boomer and Jon Turk, and skateboard legend Tony Alva to the festival. Pushing their limits in their own lives and in their respective communities, this year’s special guests are changing their sport and the world, one adventure at a time.
__________
RENAN OZTURK AND JIMMY CHIN: last fall, Conrad Anker, Renan Ozurk and Jimmy Chin tackled an historic first ascent of the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru in the Garwhal Himalaya.

“Meru was the most challenging climb of my life. Not once, but twice! It’s an honor and privilege to be asked to share our story with the 5Point community, many of whom have supported us throughout our careers as climbers and creatives. We hope to give something special back to the tribe that has given us so much,” Jimmy Chin said.

The three-person climbing team had attempted and suffered on the alpine wall in 2008 and Meru has long been the objective just out of reach for 30 years of climbers and is steeped in lore as it is considered the center of the universe in the Hindu cosmology and is the source of the Ganges River.

“I’m super excited to present the Meru story with Jimmy at 5point this year! It will be the first time that we will tell the FULL story, complete with never before seen video from our experience. Beyond the nitty gritty of the climb, we hope the convey what is was like to pick ourselves back up for a second try after the most serious and humbling failure of our lives,” Ozturk said. “I couldn’t image a better community to share it with, hope to see you there!”

Ozturk and Chin will share their experience in a special presentation on Saturday, April 28.

ERIK BOOMER AND JON TURK: Arctic explorer Jon Turk and pro kayaker Erik Boomer completed the first 1,485-mile circumnavigation of Ellesmere Island, Canada. The journey around the world’s tenth largest island took 104 days on skis, in kayaks and on foot. Polar experts considered this to be the last great, unattempted polar expedition, so daunting due to its remoteness and dangerous ice conditions — no one had attempted it before last summer. Turk and Boomer will be on hand for a special presentation on Friday, April 27.

“The opportunity to travel in such a remote and dynamic environment for so long was exactly the type of challenge and experience I spend my life seeking,” Boomer said. “I am stoked to talk about our experience with the 5Point community because sharing our experience around Ellesmere island gives us the chance to revisit the hardships, emotions and incredible lessons that we learned and felt on our 104-day journey — except we don’t have to deal with the polar bears, walrus, crushing ice and below freezing cold water.”

HAYDEN KENNEDY: many consider Cerro Torre the most beautiful and compelling mountains in the world — a postcard for the ideal that is alpinism. In January 2012, Carbondale local Hayden Kennedy and Canadian Jason Kruk became the first climbers to summit the Southeast Ridge of Cerro Torre by fair means. Kennedy will give a presentation about his historic ascent at 5Point on Thursday, April 26, 2012.

“The more I go climbing and the more I alpine climb, I think of [climbing] more like an art form than an actual activity. For me, climbing is the art of freedom. It’s an art form that people can interpret any way they wish,” Kennedy said.

TONY ALVA: Considered to be one of the most influential skateboarders of all time, Tony Alva, an original Z-Boy, hit rock bottom five years ago battling drug addiction and alcoholism. There, at his lowest point, his reliance on successes and ego came into perspective for the first time. Tony’s fight for sobriety and truth has lead him to a new perspective on life moving forward. Dedicated to giving back, Tony now sees passing the bucket as the only way out.
__________
“I’m extremely excited about this year’s festival. 5Point, to me, represents one of the best places for this community to come together to celebrate and motivate one another. This year we have an incredible lineup of films and adventurers from National Geographic explorers Jon Turk and Erik Boomer to Piolets d’Or nominees Renan Ozturk and Jimmy Chin to ground-breaking alpinist Hayden Kennedy and skate boarding legend Tony Alva — all speaking to the individual freedom and artistic flow that defines this community,” 5Point executive director, Justin Clifton, said. “The level of storytelling at this year’s festival is phenomenal — the audience is in for quite a ride.”

The fifth annual 5Point Film Festival will take place April 26 to 29, 2012 in Carbondale, Colorado, featuring a five-star roster of adventure films, special guests and live performances. All events will take place at the Carbondale Recreation Center and other local hot spots. The complete festival program will be announced in late March at http://5pointfilm.org/.

The 5Point Festival is graciously presented and made possible by sponsors Patagonia, Garfield County, Bethel Party Rentals, Alchemy Concert Systems, Polartec, Timbers Resorts, Alpine Bank, Bighorn Toyota, CLIF BAR, New Belgium Brewery,i3 Graphic Design, Town of Carbondale, Osprey Packs, The Aspen Times & Post Independent.
The 5Point Film Festival is on a mission to inspire adventure of all kinds, to connect generations through shared experience and respect, to engage passion with a conscience, and to educate through film. Proceeds from the 5Point Film Festival, a 501(c)3 non-profit, benefit 1% for the Planet and other non-profits throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond.

Tim Kemple fresh off the plane from St. Louis!
